A little about the origin:
Mascarpone comes from Lombardy and is usually produced in the region around Lodi and Abbiategrasso, Italy. The cheese is very creamy and is off-white in colour. Formerly Mascarpone was prepared only in autumn and winter and sold unpacked in small linen sacks. Thanks to modern cooling technology, it can now be stored and consumed all year around. The origins of this cheese are unknown, but the preparation method and use have been known for centuries.

In The Kitchen:
No authentic Tiramisu can be prepared without Mascarpone. It is an essential ingredient in many European sweet pastries and it is used to improve the flavour of dishes such as pasta sauces, risotto and soups. Storage: In the refrigerator, especially after opening.
